E55 Retiring in Savannah, Georgia

E55 Retiring in Savannah, Georgia

Savannah, Georgia is known as “The Forest City” for good reason. Arching live oaks, swathed with picturesquely gothic drapes of Spanish moss add charm to a city which is already beaming with historic architecture. Along with being a beautiful city, there is always something to do in Savannah. The city’s many annual events include the film festival, the music festival, the book festival, the house and garden tour, and the second largest St. Patrick’s day parade in the country.  While there are no major sports franchises in the city, it boasts 23 golf courses and the Savannah Bananas, a minor league baseball team with a circus-like atmosphere. On Episode 55 of Retire There with Gil & Gene, find out why all that and mild winter weather drew John and Mary Poggioli to Savannah.

John Poggioli

John Poggioli grew up in The Bronx and moved to North Jersey his senior year in H.S. He is a big fan of all the NY sports teams especially the Yankees, Giants and Rangers. He is also very proud of my Italian heritage and have been to Italy 3 times.
John’s professional career started when I took a job selling insurance. I wound up working for Allstate and moving to Northern Virginia. It was there where he met his wife and they have been together since '86. He has a stepdaughter and 3 fantastic grandchildren who live about 2 and a half hours away.
In 2007 he and his wife decided to retire and leave the cold and traffic behind and settled in Savannah. It has almost everything we need. PLUS NO SNOW OR TRAFFIC. LOL His hobbies include golf, reading and traveling.
Mary Poggioli grew up in Northern Virginia and started her professional career working for the Federal Government and retiring after 36 years. She's a fun grandma who really enjoys the grandkids. She has lots of hobbies and we both enjoy what the city has to offer. The couple takes advantage of the music festival, movie festival, book festival and the second best St. Paddy's day in the country.
